- Watering Guide
Step 1: Sub Base Preparation
The sub-base is the existing fill material on the site.
All Stumps, rock or other waste larger than 3 inches shall be removed. All initial drainage, grading, and form grading shall be done with the sub-base
Step 2: Site Grading
Surface water drainage is controlled by grades; these grades must be greater than a 2 % slope to allow for adequate water movement. Always grade you soil away from your building. It is important to be sure that your grades are correct before spreading topsoil, to eliminate drainage problems. Ground water drainage is typically controlled using french drains or tile drains.
Step 3: Topsoil Installation
We recommend topsoil be a friable, sandy loam with pH of 6.0 to 7.0 for optimum ‘nutrient feeding’ of your grass plant. Topsoil that is too sandy does not retain water well for root growth or turf stability. Topsoil that contains heavy clay creates drainage problems. Roots require air and water in order to grow. Water does not travel well in clay and can cause compaction causing air to become less available for roots.
Topsoil shall not contain any waste, rocks or stumps larger than 1 ½ inches. Topsoil shall be spread evenly at a industry recommended depth of 4 to 6 inches. Keep the grade about 1 to inches below walks, patios and driveways to allow for the sod install. A light rolling with a lawn roller will show up soil depressions or surface irregularities.
Step 4: Fertilizing and Fine Grading

Prior to installing sod spread “Turf Starter” fertilizer evenly over the soil as directed. "Turf Starter" establishes new grass quickly and won't burn when used as directed. The timed-release nutrients feed new grass plants as they develop providing an optimum supply of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium -- encouraging vigorous growth and root establishment of your newly sodded lawn.
Fine raking and grading of topsoil shall mix the fertilizer in and prepare a level surface for sod installation.
Step 5: Sod Installation

Install sod just as soon as you can after it is delivered. Remember this is a living plant that needs immediate action for beautiful results! Installing NB Qulaity Turf one-fold sod results in far less fatigue with ease of handling. Begin installing along a straight line, such as a driveway, sidewalk or the side of a building. Stagger joints, much as in laying bricks, pulling the edges together. Do not overlap or leave gaps, butt up as close as possible.

Step 6: Edging, Pegging and Rolling
Sod edges shall be cut in using a sharp knife (utility knife) Any sod laid on a slope of 2 vertical to 1 horizontal or greater shall be pegged to prevent slippage and/or soil erosion during rain falls prior to rooting of the plant. Pegs shall remain until turf has taken well. (approximately 14 days following installation)
Rolling of the turf shall be done with a conventional roller not to correct irregularities, but to ensure contact between turf roots and the topsoil.
Step 7: Watering Guide
Keep your newly sodded lawn well watered for at least two to three weeks. This will assist the turf edges to knit and the plant roots to become established.
o To gauge watering, simply place an empty straight edge can or container about 6 feet away from sprinkler
o When there is an inch of water in the can, it is time to move the sprinkler to the next area
o Reflected heat along buildings dries sod quickly, be sure to water such areas more often
o Important: Check wind pattern to be sure desired area is in fact being watered
